ROBERTS, James

1837 - 1909

James Roberts was baptised at St Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire on 27 February 1837, son of Samuel and Sarah Roberts. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1889-1891 and exhibited five pictures from 11 Park View, Potternewton, Leeds in 1889, 'Early Morning on the Gipping', 'On the River Gipping', 'In the Gloaming', 'A Quiet Corner' and another 'On the River Gipping', the River Gipping runs from Ipswich through Stowmarket. In 1890 he exhibited four pastels 'A Welsh Morland', 'Bolton Abbey on the Whark', 'Druidical Circle, Keswick' and 'The Fading Light'. James Roberts died at Leeds in 1909, aged 72. His works are often conflated with an earlier James Roberts (1753-c.1809) who was mostly a portrait painter and worked around Oxford.
