MILLAR, James Henry Charles

1863 - 1929

James Henry Charles Millar was born at Burgate Villa, St John's Wood, London on 17 July 1863, son of James Lawrence Millar (1840-1881) and his wife Fanny Susanna Ellen née Bright (1839-1913), who was born at Saxmundham, Suffolk, and married at Marylebone in 1862, Fanny was a niece of artist Henry Bright. The couple divorced in 1870 and in 1871, young James and his 32-year-old mother, were living at 41 Clifton Road, Marylebone, the home of her aunt, 62-year-old widow Margaret Todd, a stationer. James's father died in 1881, aged 41, when Fanny was a 40 [sic] year-old boarding house proprietor, living at 11 Harrington Road, Kensington, London with 17-year-old James, a student. James was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1886-1890 and exhibited from 22 Anglesea Road, Ipswich in 1888, six pictures 'Condiment', 'A Coming Storm', 'Steamers Coaling, Sunset', 'Port Mizzen-Sand Carts', 'Sunlight in Water' and 'Gossip on the Beach' and he also exhibited five pictures at the Royal Academy. By 1891 James, now a 27-year-old landscape painter, was living at The Bryn, Padstow, Cornwall with his 52-year-old mother and an indoor servant. James married at Padstow, Cornwall on 10 September 1896, Mabel Josephine Key (12 November 1873-7 July 1964), daughter of James Hawken Key of Treravel, Padstow, Cornwall. In 1901, a 37-year-old married artist, boarding at 27 New Cavendish Street, Cornwall and in 1911, a 47-year-old artist, living at Trevone, Padstow, Cornwall with his 75-year-old mother, 36 year old wife and their five children, all born in Cornwall, with a tutor and an indoor servant. James Henry Charles Millar died at Goonlaze, St Agnes, Cornwall on 15 January 1929, aged 65 and his wife died at Harlyn House, Harlyn Bay, Padstow, Cornwall on 7 July 1964. Three of his paintings are in the Royal Collection including 'The Victoria & Albert II' and 'Pergola, Osborne'. His children were James Henry Bright (1 April 1898-29 April 1917); Norman Patrick Sylvester; Gery Damsy Lawence; Joyce Pamela Marjorie and Mary Elizabeth Dorothy.
