CHARLESWORTH, Samuel

1870 - 1958

Samuel Charlesworth was born at Spring Grove Avenue, Headingley-cum-Burley, Leeds, Yorkshire on 11 February 1870, second child of Charles Samuel Charlesworth (1846-2 June 1897), a medical student, and his wife Mary MacDonald née Dixon (1842-12 November 1926), who married at Bradford in 1866. In 1871, Samuel was a 1-year-old, living at Leeds with his parents, 24-year-old Charles and 28-year-old Mary and his elder sibling brother, Charles Dixon Charlesworth (1867-25 December 1908). In 1881, they were living at 24 Consort Terrace, Leeds, his father an 'annuitant' now with five sons and they were still there in 1891, 21-year-old Samuel being described as an 'insurance clerk'. Samuel studied art part-time and exhibited at the Yorkshire Union of Artists from Leeds before making his career as an artist. His father's death is recorded at Westbeare House, Prescott Culmstock, Devon in 1897 and in 1901, Samuel was a 31-year-old oil & watercolour artist, living at Westbeare House, Prescott Culmstock with his younger brother, 22-year-old John, a chemistry student, and his cousin, 66-year-old Elizabeth Dixon, a spinster. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1895-1913, exhibiting from Prescott House in 1896 four pictures, 'View from the Cliff', 'November in the Calne Valley', 'The First Breath of Autumn' and 'On the Cliff'; three in 1897 'On the Cliff', 'The Village Street' and 'In an Orchard'; and in 1898 three oils 'The Evening Hour', 'The Silence of the Sea' and 'Green Pastures of the Sea' and a watercolour 'Milking Time' and exhibited regularly between one and three pictures (seven in 1903) each year until 1913. He married at Bishop's Hull Church, Somerset on 29 April 1906, Ella Mary Mills (7 October 1873-10 November 1949), daughter of the late Col. Mills of the Bombay Staff Corps. Their first child Mary Ella (21 August 1907-2 June 1986) was born in Devon followed by a second daughter Catherine (29 April 1910-30 October 1985). By 1911, a 41-year-old painter/artist, had returned to live with his widowed mother, at Prescott House, Prescott Culmstock, Devon together with his 37-year-old wife and their two daughters. In 1939, a watercolour painter, living at 'Sunnybank', Uffculme, Devon with his wife and two unmarried daughters. Samuel Charlesworth was of Amelia Cottage, 1 East Grantlands, Uffculme, Devon when he died at Belmont Hospital, Tiverton, Devon on 18 December 1958, aged 88.
