Ken Cuthbert

Kenneth E. Cuthbert was born at 447 Nacton Road, Ipswich in 1929, son of Charles Edward Cuthbert (21 January 1890-1983), a warehouseman, and his wife Ivy Grace née Noble (31 January 1894-1977), who married at Ipswich in 1919 and in 1939, were living at 257 Britannia Road, Ipswich. Ken's art training began in 1950 when he met the Ipswich-based Dutch artist and tutor Cor Visser, starting with watercolours and then some barge paintings. The dock area of Ipswich provided much of the subject matter for his early work and this influence led to the development of his painting style. Ken started teaching in the evening and, giving up his job in weights and measures in 1972, took up art as a profession, with a small studio in Waterworks Street, Ipswich. He married at Ipswich in 1983, Mavis Izzard and in 1985 he visited France and, being impressed by the colour and landscape of the Dordogne, purchased a cottage to use as a base during his painting months and spent the following years between France and England but in 2000 returned to a permanent residence at Felixstowe, Suffolk. A founder member of [[8+1 Suffolk Group,4380]] and now a Life Member of the Ipswich Art Society, in 1957 he exhibited from 257 Britannia Road, Ipswich an oil, 'River Orwell, October' and two watercolours 'River View Hotel, Ipswich' and 'The 'Magray' Ipswich Dock', in 1977 exhibited from 18 Anglesea Road, Ipswich 'Sproughton Lock', 'Still Life' and 'Woodbridge from Hill Farm, Martlesham' and in 1978 'Levington from Trimley Shore' and in 2006 from 7 Chester Road, Felixstowe, two oil paintings 'Southwold Shore Image' and 'Aldeburgh III'. Elected president of the Ipswich Art Club in March 2002 and had a solo exhibition at the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich and mixed shows at Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and elsewhere.
