Matthew Garrard

Matthew C. C. Garrard, was born at Upminster, Essex in 1960, son of George Garrard and his wife Josephine H. née Brooks, who married at Upminster in 1953 and about 2000 moved to Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk. After a career in journalism and public relations, Matthew Garrard became a professional artist in 1996 but has been based in Suffolk since 1982. The East Coast features prominently in the pastel landscapes and portraits which form a large part of his work. His distinctive style is typified by vigorous use of light and colour to capture the mood and character of a subject. He has regularly exhibited at the Southold Gallery in Suffolk, winning the 'Guest’s Choice' and has also exhibited in a number of East Anglian galleries and in the Home Counties, and with the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and was selected to appear in the Laing Art exhibition in Newcastle. In 1995 a series of prints reproduced from his paintings were issued and, following their success, a further set of six were launched in 1996 which include four images from Southwold and one each from Lowestoft and Walberswick. He married secondly in Waveney, Suffolk in 2000, Dr Isobel F. McKenzie and lived at 71 High Street, Wangford, Suffolk but now lives and works from Dipping Well, Sunset Lane, Southam, Gloucestershire.
