GARRARD, Matthew
Matthew C. C. Garrard was born at Upminster, Essex in 1960, son of George Garrard and his wife Josephine H. née Brooks, who married at Upminster in 1953 and around the year 2000 moved to Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk. Matthew Garrard has been based in Suffolk since 1982 and, after a career in journalism and public relations, became a professional artist in 1996. A portrait, landscape and marine artist, his distinctive style is typified by vigorous use of light and colour to capture the mood and character of a subject. A member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and has regularly exhibited at the Southwold Gallery in Suffolk, winning the 'Guest’s Choice' and has also exhibited in several East Anglian galleries and in the Home Counties, and was selected to appear in the Laing Art Gallery exhibition in Newcastle. In 1995 a series of prints reproduced from his paintings were issued and, following their success, a further set of six were launched in 1996 which include four images from Southwold and one each from Lowestoft and Walberswick. He married in Waveney, Suffolk in 2000, Dr Isobel F. McKenzie and they lived at 71 High Street, Wangford, Suffolk but now lives and works from Dipping Well, Sunset Lane, Southam, Gloucestershire.
