SPURLING, John Henry Forster
John Henry Forster Spurling was baptised at St Mary's Church, Shotley, Ipswich on 24 July 1871, only child of Henry Spurling (1838-14 June 1894), an auctioneer, and his wife Amelia Jessie née Lanchester (1836-5 January 1897), who married at Shotley in April 1870. John studied music at Dr Bates Musical College in Norwich and in 1891, a 19-year-old solo pianist & musician, living at Sunnybank, Warrington Road, Ipswich with his parents, 52-year-old Henry and 52-year-old Amelia, and they had living with them a niece, 20-year-old Alice Alston, as a mother's help, and they retained two indoor servants. As Jack H. F. Spurling, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1888-1893 and exhibited from Sunnybank, Warrington Road, Ipswich in 1888, 'Handford Meadows' and 'On the Beach, Felixstowe', in 1889 'Rushmere Heath', 'Still Life' and 'After a Little Summer Shower' and his last exhibits as 'Jack' Spurling was in 1892, 'A Summer Morning' and 'A Sketch at Shotley Point'. In 1901, a 29-year-old 'living on own means', visiting 31-year-old Charles Shaw, a 'retired' bank manager at 42 Upper Westbourne Villas, Aldrington, Steyning, Sussex. John Henry Forster Spurling died at The Flower House, Catford, Kent on 2 November 1924, aged 53.
