SYKES, Ivy
As Ivy Wilks, she was born at 19 Providence Street, Farsley, North Bierley, Yorkshire on 9 August 1896, daughter of William Wilks, a plumber, and his wife Harriet née Gillard, who married at Newport, Monmouthshire in 1888. In 1911, Ivy was a 14-year-old 'winder', living at 5 North View, Armley, Leeds with her parents, 48-year-old William and 49-year-old Harriet, and siblings, James William 22, Wilfred 20, Horace 19, Elsie, 16 and Sam 12. Ivy married at Bramley, Yorkshire in 1921, Arthur Preston Sykes (28 October 1895-14 January 1988) and in 1939, Ivy was living at The Cottage, Haigh Moor Road, Morley, Yorkshire with her husband Arthur and two children 16-year-old Ivy May [Austin] and 13-year-old Dorothy [Chambers]. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1970-1973 and as Mrs I. Sykes, exhibited from Garrold's, Oak Lane, Dedham, Essex in 1969, an oil 'Forsythia' and in 1971 'The Edge of the Woods'. Ivy Sykes died at 1 Newlands, Elmsett, Ipswich on 26 January 1984 and her husband died at the same address four years later.
