SHIRRA, Douglas Gordon
Douglas Gordon Shirra was born at Broughton-in-Furness, Lancashire on 25 February 1903, eldest child of Robert Shirra (1874-1933), an oak basket maker, and his wife Agnes née Billington (1881-1931), who married at Preston, Lancashire in 1902. In 1911, Douglas was an 8-year-old, living at Eccle Riggs, Broughton-in-Furness with his parents, 34 [sic] year-old Robert and 29-year-old Agnes, with his two siblings, Winifred Annie 6 and Ronald James 2. Douglas married at Skipton, Yorkshire in 1927, Myra Ella Greenwood (21 January 1906-7 January 1975) and in 1939, a printer compositor, living at 15 Wroxham Road, Ipswich with his wife Myra. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1944-1955 and exhibited from 20 Norman Crescent, Ipswich in 1942, two works 'Autumn Furrows' and 'Stack Yard at Pond Hall Farm', in 1943 two works 'High Altar at St Bartholomew's' and 'Suffolk Stubble' and in 1944, two oils 'Sealyham Family' and 'Foxhall Heath on a June Morning' and two watercolours 'Down the Bluebell Wood' and 'Gainsborough Lane'. Douglas Gordon Shirra died at 20 Norman Crescent, Ipswich on 8 November 1974, his wife followed two months later.
