SECCOMBE, Thomas Strong
Thomas Strong Seccombe was born at Calcutta, India on 24 February 1840 and baptised at Fort William, Bengal on 22 March 1840, son of Thomas Seccombe and his wife Caroline Mary née Brunton. On 21 June 1856 he joined the army and on 11 July 1856 Thomas was gazetted from Gentleman to Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Captain on 3 April 1867, Major 21 August 1875 and Hon. Lieut Col. on retiring on 26 February 1881. He married at St Mark's Church, Jersey on 4 June 1867, Amelia Blanche Kennedy (1841-9 May 1920) daughter of Col. Walter Crauford Kennedy, and their son was born at Bella Rocca, Jersey on 22 March 1868. In 1871, Thomas was a 40-year-old captain in the Royal Artillery, stationed at Woolwich Barracks, London. As Capt. Seccombe, a founder member of the Ipswich Art Club in 1874 and exhibited one picture 'Moscow'. In 1881, a 41-year-old retired Lieut.Col., living at 3 Belmont Road, Clapham, London with his 39-year-old wife Amelia who was born Portsmouth in 1841, and two daughters, Gladys 9, born Plumstead and Olive Dorothy 4, born Shooters Hill, both in Kent. The author, editor, and illustrator of several books. Thomas Strong Seccombe's death is reported at Mon Rêve, Montmole, Lausanne, Switzerland on 12 December 1899 but he is also recorded as attending his daughter's, Olive Dorothy Seccombe's wedding at Cochin, Madras, India on 7 October 1908 to John Evelyn Cartet Brunton. His wife Amelia Blanche Seccombe was a widow of 341 Eglinton Road, Woolwich, Kent when she died at Cardington Vicarage, Bedfordshire on 9 May 1920.
