SANDEMAN, Hon. Phyllis Elinor
As Phyllis Elinor Legh, she was born at 6 Belgrave Square, London on 9 December 1895, youngest daughter of Thomas Wodehouse Legh, 2nd Baron Newton (18 March 1857–21 March 1942), and his wife Evelyn Caroline Bromley Davenport (13 September 1859-13 September 1931), daughter of William Bromley-Davenport (20 August 1821–15 June 1884), who married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 24 July 1880. Phyllis married at St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico, London on 31 January 1918, Henry Gerard Walter Sandeman (1 July 1885-19 January 1953), a port & sherry shipper, and they had two daughters, Susan, born 1 August 1923 whose father commissioned artist Frederic Whiting to paint her portrait which was exhibited on the front cover of the April 1944 'Woman's Journal', and Chlöe (born 1928), a portrait of whom Phyllis exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1941. Although not a member of the Ipswich Art Club until 1938, Phyllis exhibited from The Mill House, Ufford, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1935, two pictures 'Still Life' and 'The Pollard Willows, Ufford', one in 1937 'Liza', in 1942 one of her exhibits was a portrait 'Miss Nancy Churchman' and in 1944 she exhibited illustrations to 'Pilgrim's Progress' and she continued exhibiting until at least 1974 when she exhibited from the same address, a watercolour 'River with Bridge'. In 1939, she was living at 76 Chester Square, City of Westminster, London with her husband. Phyllis Elinor Sandeman died at Mill House, Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk on 5 April 1986. She was also the author of 'Treasure on Earth' about her childhood at Lyme Park, Cheshire.
