QUILTER, Ellen
Sarah Ellen Quilter was born at Finsbury Square, London on 31 October 1844, eldest daughter and second of the four children of wealthy accountant William Quilter (7 August 1808-19 November 1888), who was born at Walton-cum-Felixstowe, Suffolk and left over £600,000 at his death, and his wife Elizabeth Harriet née Lewis (c1807-29 June 1874) also known as Cuthbert, who married at St Pancras Old Church, London on 30 May 1842. In 1851, Sarah Ellen was a 6-year-old, living at Crown Lane, Lower Norwood, Surrey with her parents, 42-year-old William and 43-year-old Elizabeth and two siblings Frederick Edward 3, who was born in London and newly born Harry, who was born in Norwood, and they retained seven indoor servants. In 1861, she had discontinued using her first name of Sarah and was known as Ellen, and as a 16-year-old, living at the family home at Knights Hill, Norwood with her three siblings, William Cuthbert 20, Edward Frederick 12 and Harry 10, and they were still there in 1871. In 1881, a 35-year-old art student, living at 28 Norfolk Street, Park Lane, London with six indoor servants. As Miss E. Quilter, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1884-1891 and exhibited from 28 Norfolk Street, Park Lane, London, three pictures in 1884 'Study of Peonies for a Round Panel' and two watercolours 'Oranges' and 'The Hall Garden' and in 1885 two watercolours 'August at Porchester' and 'Sunset in the Valley of Ragatz', and as Miss S. E. Quilter a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1894-1895 exhibiting from 8 Duke Street Mansions, Grosvenor Square, London in 1894 'Sunrise in Rajputana'. She married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 26 September 1895, Alexander Allan Muter (1857-18 April 1933), a mercantile marine captain, and in 1901, a 53 [sic] year-old living at 146 Ashley Gardens, St Georges, Hanover Square, London with her 43-year-old Scottish born husband Alexander, a master mariner, and they retained three servants. By 1911, 53-year-old Alexander had taken the position as Harbour Master at Harwich, Essex and was living at Dovercourt, Essex with his 55 [sic] year-old wife Sarah Ellen, and they retained four servants. Sarah Ellen Muter died at Erewhon, Fronks Road, Dovercourt on 30 November 1923, aged 79 and her husband, who was also known as Alexander Allan Merrylees, followed on 18 April 1933. Her brother was Sir William Cuthbert Quilter, Bart. (1841-1911) of Bawdsey Manor, Suffolk.
