PILLOW, Millicent

1893 - 1970

As Millicent Gladys Thompson, she was born at Wolverton, Potterspury, Buckinghamshire on 10 April 1893, youngest of six surviving of the seven of children of Charles Robert Thompson (1853-1931), a railway coach-body builder, and his wife Mary Ann née Shelton, who married at Crewe, Cheshire on 20 August 1877. In 1911, Millicent was a 17-year-old scholar, living at 49 Aylesbury Road, Wolverton with her parents, 58-year-old Charles and 57-year-old Mary Ann, with three siblings, Chrissie 22, Margaret Elsie 20 and Frederick Arthur 19, all born at Wolverton. Millicent married at Wolverton in 1920, Leonard Charles Pillow (1890-3 June 1939), a civil service clerk, and painted under the name of Mrs Millicent Pillow. In 1939, she and her husband were living at 23 Rylands Road, Coulsden, Surrey with their daughter Gladys Mary (4 December 1921-25 August 2013), but later that year her husband was drowned whilst swimming in the sea on the first day of their holiday at Maidencombe, South Devon. By 1954 Millicent was living at 34 Wroxham Road, Ipswich. A teacher and an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1964-1969 and exhibited from 34 Wroxham Road, Ipswich in 1963, two oil paintings 'Summer Meadow' and 'Pink Jumper' and her last was in the following year 'Snow Scene'. Millicent Gladys Pillow died at 34 Wroxham Road, Ipswich on 21 March 1970.
