PEDLER, Mary
As Mary Johnson, she was born at Barnes, Surrey on 8 December 1890, daughter of Marcus Johnson (11 February 1848-19 June1931), a carpet warehouseman, and his wife Minnie (14 February 1860-30 December 1940), who was born in Ireland. In 1891, Mary was a 2-year-old, living at Bickerton Road, Islington, London with her parents, 42-year-old Marcus, who was born at Islington and 31-year-old Minnie, with two sibling sisters, Dora 5 and Frances 4, both born at Chiswick, London. Mary married at Islington in 1916, Dr Hubert Charles George Pedler (22 September 1885-5 May 1958), then an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps and in civilian life a general practitioner and in 1921 they were living at Moss Cottage, Little Cornard, Suffolk with a one-year-old daughter Valerie Mary, who was born in London. Mary was an artist in watercolour and an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1939-1957 firstly from the Manor House, Mendlesham, Suffolk where they were living in 1939, Mary exhibited four works in 1941, 'Summerhouse Window', 'Georgian Mantlepiece', 'The Cart Lodge' and 'Flower Study', in 1942 four works 'Seaman's Hall, Wetheringsett', 'Prunus and Laburnum', 'The Stack Yard' and 'The Pine Tree', in 1943 five works 'The Back Field', 'The Horse Pond', 'Lily Pond', 'South Porch, Mendlesham Church' and 'Still Life', in 1944 'House at Mendlesham', 'Winter Evening', 'Cattle Pond' and 'Farm at Mendlesham' and in 1946 from 12 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich four works, 'Larkspur and Clarkia', 'Val', 'Essex Garden' and 'From the Mill House', in 1947 'Winter Field', 'Red Bridge, Hoxne', Hawks Mill Street, Needham Market' and 'Spring' and Mary was a regular exhibitor with usually four paintings each exhibition. Mary Pedlar died at The Elms, Headbourne Worthy, Winchester, Hampshire on 24 September 1957, aged 68 and her husband died at 7 Gainsborough Road, Ipswich on 5 May the following year aged 72.
