OVEY, Margaret Beatrice
Margaret Beatrice Clara Ovey was born in London on 6 October 1908, only daughter of the two children of Major Darrell Ovey (31 December 1881-1 November 1950), an army officer, and his wife Gladys Margaretta née Downing (22 March 1879-24 March 1961), who married at Whitton Church, Ipswich on 7 June 1905. In 1911, Margaret was a 2-year-old, living at Thurleston Lodge, Henley Road, Ipswich, with her grand-parents, Col Cameron McCartney Harwood Downing (8 December 1845-7 June 1926) and his wife Adela née Johnson (c1842-20 March 1919) and Margaret's 1 year old sibling brother Cameron Downing Ovey, with eight indoor servants. In 1939, an 'artist on her own account', living at Glebe House, Baylham, Ipswich with her parents Darrell and Gladys Ovey. A member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1932, exhibiting from Baylham House, near Ipswich in 1935, an oil 'Portrait Study of a Girl', in 1941 three works 'Autumn Day in Suffolk', 'Mill near Blakeney, Norfolk' and 'Penn Ponds, Richmond Park', in 1943 an oil 'Suffolk Cornfield', in 1944 two oils 'View of the Solent' and 'Christopher', and was still a member in 1977 when she exhibited from The Firs, Grundisburgh Road, Woodbridge, 'Staveley, Cumbria' and in 1978 'Kettle and Oranges' and was a regular exhibitor showing in 1980 a 'Portrait Sketch'. Margaret Beatrice Clara Ovey died at The Firs, Chapel Lane, Grundisburgh, Ipswich on 24 February 1989, aged 80, she was unmarried.
