MARTIN, James Mason
James Mason Martin was born at Framlingham, Suffolk on 8 March 1876, eldest son of John Martin (1847-4 August 1904), a magistrate's clerk, and his wife Sarah Ann née Brooks (1846-31 December 1918), who married at Framlingham, Suffolk on 1 May 1872. In 1881, James was a 5-year-old, living at Albert Road, Framlingham with his parents, 34-year-old John, who was born at Barnham, Thetford, Norfolk and 34-year-old Sarah Ann, who was born at Hacheston, Suffolk, with three siblings, Florence Jane [Worthington] 7, Gertrude Mary [Woodard] 6 and Albert Edward 3, all born at Framlingham. James was educated at Framlingham College 1888-1894 and articled to Charles Clubbe, a local solicitor. In 1902 admitted a solicitor and became a partner in the firm of Turner, Martin & Symes, at 4 Elm Street, Ipswich. He married at St Matthew's Church, Norwich on 1 July 1903, Gertrude Annie Green (1877-14 October 1938), eldest daughter of James Green of Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich. In 1911, James was a 35-year-old solicitor, living at 58 High Street, Ipswich with his 33-year-old wife Gertrude and two children, Leonard James 6 and Gertrude 4. A member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1925 until his death but does not seem to have been an exhibitor being described as an honorary officer, hon. trustee and solicitor. In 1939, a solicitor, living at 6 Park Road, Ipswich with three indoor servants. James Mason Martin died at 'Woodstone', 6 Park Avenue, Ipswich on 20 June 1960, aged 84.
