HOCKEY, Sarah Fanny
Sarah Fanny Hockey was baptised at Walworth, Surrey on 12 September 1875, daughter of William Henry Hockey (1842-24 December 1906), doorkeeper at the Home Office, and his wife Rhoda Elisabeth née Niblow (1845-1910), who married at St George's Hanover Square, London in 1871. In 1881, Sarah was a 5-year-old, living at 168 Camberwell Road, Lambeth with her parents, 38-year-old Henry and 35-year-old Rhoda, with six siblings, Henry William (1871-1948), Edith Rhoda (1873-), Edgar James (1874-1964), Effie Maud (1876-1944), Mary Elizabeth (1878-) and Frederick Hinton (1880-1915). In 1891, Sarah and her two younger sisters, Effie and Mary, were boarder at a high school at Alexandra House, Market Street, Cookham, Berkshire run by Arabella Hinton and in 1901, a 25-year-old lithographic artist, living with the family, now at 268 Vauxhall Buildings Road, Hanover Square, London. Her father died at 12 Beaumont Street, Marylebone, London on 24 December 1906 and in 1911, Sarah was a 34-year-old miniature artist, lodging at 7 Mount Ephraim Road, Streatham, London, the home of Donald Wallace Doughty, a 52-year-old schoolmaster, and his family. Sarah was an aunt to composer Benjamin Britten and in 1922 painted a miniature of him from 21 Kirkley Cliff Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1924-1925 and from 88 Berners Street, Ipswich, the home of William Hockey, she exhibited in 1924 six items, 'Beth, younger daughter of R. V. Britten, Esq.', 'Miss Letitia Withall', 'Mrs William Poynts Blandy', a case of four miniature portraits, a case of miniatures of 'Baby' and 'The Gypsey' and a miniature 'W. H. Hockey, Esq.'. Sarah Fanny Hockey died in Surrey mid-eastern district in 1939, aged 64, she was unmarried. (Selected Letters and Diaries of Benjamin Britten. 2011)
