HARTRIDGE, Ellen
Ellen Hartridge was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 5 June 1868, penultimate child of James Hartridge (c.1817-1888), a coach proprietor, and his wife Susannah Hills (14 November 1830-14 January 1907), eldest daughter of James Hills, a farmer of Martlesham, who married at Woodbridge on 22 January 1852. In 1871, 2-year-old Ellen was living at The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge with her father, 52-year-old James, Susannah was absent from home, and her five siblings Annie 18, James 16, William 9, Rose 7 and Edward 5. Her father died at Woodbridge in 1888, aged 71 and in 1891 Ellen was a 21-year-old assistant in the family flower shop at 1 Crown Villas, Thoroughfare, Woodbridge with her 59-year-old widowed mother Susanna[h] and 17-year-old sister Alice, who also worked in the flower shop, and a brother Edward, a salesman. Ellen studied at the Ipswich School of Art and in February 1900 was placed third in 'Painting from Still Life', with Henry Cotman and Sylvia Packard being 1st and 2nd, but she beat Sylvia Packard into second place in 'Drawing Human Figures from Life' class. In 1901, a 30-year-old art teacher, still living at Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, with her mother and a visitor, 44-year-old Alice Mary Goodchild but the following year Ellen was living at 126 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich and by 1907 had moved to 7 Manor Road, Ipswich where her mother died in 1907, aged 76. In 1911, both Ellen Hartridge and Alice Goodchild, as artists and art teachers, were living at 7 Manor Road. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club and exhibited from 126 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich in 1902, five watercolours 'A Peaceful Evening', 'Afternoon on the Stour', 'The Stour near Stratford', 'Low Tide on the Orwell' and 'The Orwell, near Gainsborough Lane' but does not seem to have exhibited after this. In 1939, an art teacher at a private school, still living at 7 Manor Road, Ipswich with a companion help Martha Gosling, and where Ellen was living before her death at Brooke House Nursing Home, Henley Road, Ipswich on 9 September 1951, aged 83, she was unmarried.
