COE, Alfred

1860 - 1949

Alfred Coe was born at Litcham, Swaffham, Norfolk on 1 March 1860, son of George Starling Coe (15 July 1834-4 October 1919), a tea dealer, and his wife Susan née Coe, who married in 1853. His father moved his business to Bridge Street, Downham Market where in 1881, Alfred was a cabinet maker. Alfred then came to live at 17 Carr Street, Ipswich and married at Tacket Street Congregational Chapel on 7 February 1891, Bessie Thurston Parsons (7 July 1868-15 March 1952), only daughter of the late Alfred Parson of 140 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. They lived at 17 Carr Street, Ipswich, carrying on his business as a cabinet maker & decorator. A painter in oil and sometimes in watercolour and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1905-1948, exhibiting in 1894 from Bond Street, Ipswich, ‘Flower Paintings in Oils’. A prolific exhibitor showing over 200 works between 1905 and 1948, most of local views and still life flowers including from 49 Christchurch Street, Ipswich in 1915, 'Barn Interior', 'Stocks', 'Flower Study', 'Garden Path', 'Thistles', 'Back of the Farm', 'Pigs', 'Back of the House' and 'Oat Field' others included in 1905, ‘A Sketch-Dedham’, in 1927 ‘Sweet Peas’, ‘Violets’ and ‘Cromer Cliffs’. In 1901, Alfred was a 41-year-old cabinet maker, living at 41 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his 32-year-old wife Bessie and 9-year-old daughter, Nellie Elizabeth Dorothy Coe but by 1911 had moved to 49 Christchurch Street. In 1939, still a cabinet maker at 49 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his wife Bessie, and still exhibited at the Art Club in 1937 six oils, 'Autumn Flowers', 'A Break in the Clouds', 'The Gipping, near Needham Market', 'River Ouse, Denver Sluice', 'From the Garden' and 'Epping Forest', in 1942-1944 he exhibited six works each year. Alfred Coe died at 49 Christchurch Street, Ipswich on 3 February 1949, aged 89.
