EDMUNDS, Evelyn Roy

1884 - 1965

Evelyn Roy Edmunds was born at 2 St John's Wood Park, Hampstead, London on 18 December 1884, second son of George Richard Edmunds (1851-29 October 1924), a solicitor, and his wife Caroline Augusta Gardner (1859-7 March 1934), youngest daughter of the late Robert Gardner of Leamington, who married at St Stephen's the Martyr, Avenue Road, Regents Park, London on 12 June 1880. On 15 May 1900, Evelyn enlisted in the Royal Navy, being promulgated sub-lieutenant on 15 April 1905 and served as a Lt. Com. during the First World War. He married at Chatham, Medway on 16 August 1914, Anita Margaret Pole Moore (1889-22 October 1918), daughter of Major E. St F. Moore of Walton-cum-Felixstowe, Suffolk. He retired with the rank of Commander, and they lived at Troon, Oatlands Chase, Weybridge, Surrey when he travelled with his wife to Jamaica, West Indies. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1943-1964, but had exhibited from Highstead, Leeks Hill, Melton, Suffolk in 1941 'Rhubarb', in 1942 'Carnations' and 'The White Poplar', in 1943 four oils 'Flower Piece', 'A Bucketful of Flowers', 'Tulips and Irises' and 'Elms and Ivy', in 1944 two oils 'Iceland Poppies' and 'Snowdrops', in 1947, two oils 'No Coupons' and 'Spring Sunshine', in 1948 two oils 'In the Grounds of Bury Hill' and 'Mr. F. G. Hender' and two oils in 1949 'Wallflowers' and 'Greenery', two in 1951 'An Old Fan' and 'Interior' and was a regular annual exhibitor, exhibiting two or three oil paintings each year but from 1959 was exhibiting from Graham House, Anglesea Road, Ipswich, two oils 'Still Life' and 'Flower Piece' and continued to exhibit until his death. Evelyn Roy Edmunds was still of Graham House, Anglesea Road, Ipswich when he died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital on 21 April 1965, aged 80.
