Frank Daniell

Frank Robinson Daniell was born at East Donyland, Colchester, Essex in 1866, third son of Shepherd Thomas Daniell (1826-4 August 1889), a maltster & brewer, and his wife Elizabeth Susannah née Fairie (1825-1879), who married at Hackney, London in 1855. In 1871, 4-year-old Frank was living at The Street, East Donyland with his parents, 44-year-old Shepherd and 45-year-old Elizabeth with his three siblings, Emily Jane 8, Herbert Basil 6 and Frances Elizabeth 2, all born in Essex. The Daniell's were well known locally for their brewery, which became a large business in the village of West Bergholt and, on the death of his mother in 1879, the family moved to West Stockwell Street, Colchester. Frank married at Colchester on 27 December 1899, Ethel Maude Brignell and in 1901, a 34-year-old artist/painter staying at the Devonshire House Hotel, Bishopsgate, London with his 22-year-old wife, who was born at Colchester, but their home was then at 15a High Street, Colchester. Daniell is best known as a portrait painter, whose subjects were the celebrities of the day such as local Mayors and many prominent people in the life of the town of Colchester. In addition to painting portraits, he also completed some noteworthy still life works and travelled in Europe painting church interiors, and those religious paintings are rich in detail. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1897-1914, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy 1889-1921; the Society of Portrait Painters; Paris Salon and in Berlin and Madrid. The Colchester Museum Collection has twenty-two paintings by Frank Daniell, most of which were commissioned by Colchester Corporation for the new Town Hall which opened in 1902. In 1974 Colchester Museum loaned his oil 'John Kavanagh' for the Ipswich Art Club centenary. Frank Robinson Daniell died 8 East Hill, Colchester on 11 March 1932 after suffering a heart attack ten days earlier and was buried in Colchester cemetery. His wife Ethel died in 1948, aged 70. They had one son, Dirk Francis Daniell (1900-1926).
