CREWES, Horace James
Horace James Crewes was born at Grampound, Cornwall on 13 December 1883, son of James Francis Crew[e]s (25 August 1854-15 December 1922), a land agent, and his wife Grace Ann née Yelland (1856-10 April 1932), who married at the Free Methodist Chapel, St Austell, Cornwall on 5 Octoberf 1881. In 1911, Horace was a 23-year-old bank cashier, living at 9 Strangways Terrace, Truro, Cornwall with his parents, 56-year-old James and 54-year-old Grace, and two siblings, Mildred Mary 20 and Clara Juliette 20, who were both born at Grampound, St Austell, Cornwall. Horace then joined the army, being gazetted Second lieutenant in 1905 but resigned his captain's commission in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry on 24 June 1914. He married at St Michael's Church, Wandsworth Common on 14 April 1914, Alice Margaret Clarke, second daughter of Dr. Clarke of Bolingbroke Grove, Wandsworth Common, Alice died at Cowes, Isle of Wight on 24 March 1917, and was buried in Northwood Cemetery on 27 March 1917. Horace married secondly at Cambridge on 9 October 1921, Florence Elizabeth Jones (22 February 1894-2 December 1981) and came to live at Ipswich, as manager of Lloyds Bank in the town. In 1939, a sub bank manager, living at 119 Henley Road, Ipswich with his wife Florence. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1934-1939 from 119 Henley Road, Ipswich but does not seem to have exhibited. Horace James Crewes was still living in Henley Road in 1965 but died at Old Park House, Clevedon, Somerset on 22 January 1967.
