COSTIN-NIAN, Lt Col Charles Barry

1887 - 1964

Charles Barry Costin was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 7 December 1887, son of Charles Costin and his wife Clara Mary née Wright. He attended Sandhurst Military College at Crowthorne in 1901 and in 1911, an officer in the Royal Canadian Regiment, boarding at Arnold House, 2 Southampton Street, Farnborough, Hampshire. He served in the Army during the First World War and as a Captain in the West Yorkshire Regiment was awarded the Military Cross in 1916. He added Nian to his surname and Lieut. Col. C.B. Costin-Nian, M.C., Royal Tank Corps, was married at St Mary's Cathedral, Cairo, Egypt, on the 12 April 1933, to Miss Frances Tate (1903-1977), of Kentucky. A Lieut. Col. in command of the 6th Battalion the Royal Tank Corps, a Companion of the Order of Bath and he retired from the Army in 1937 but was recalled on the reserve list in 1939. A painter in oil and water colour and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1938-1939, exhibiting from Monks Hall, Glemsford, Suffolk in 1938 an oil, 'Trees and River' and three watercolours 'Upper Stour River', 'Suffolk Coast Lines' and 'Lower Stour River'. In 1941, a military writer for the 'Daily Express'. Charles Barry Costin was of Splash Point, Seaford Head, Sussex when he died at St Mary's Hospital, Eastbourne on 25 April 1964, aged 76.
