COBBOLD, Herbert St George
Herbert St George Cobbold was born at Ufford, Woodbridge, Suffolk on 22 March 1871, second son of Ernest St George Cobbold (April 1840-23 February 1895) and his wife Helen Emma, née Cazenove (30 October 30 1842-14 November 1917), youngest daughter of Philip Cazenove of Clapham Common, who married at Christ Church, Battersea on 7 January 1864. Herbert was educated at Haileybury and in 1889, was a 2nd Lieutenant in The Duke of Connaught's Own Hampshire and Isle of Wight Artillery and afterwards a Major in the Essex and Suffolk Artillery Militia. A partner in Bacon, Cobbold & Co., bankers on Cornhill, Ipswich, in 1900 he was living at Brooke House, Henley Road, Ipswich. He married at St Mark's, North Audley Street, London on 20 February 1909, his cousin, Evelyn Anna Cobbold (15 March 1873-13 January 1959), daughter of John Patteson Cobbold (1831-1875) and in June 1908 he purchased at auction, the 48-acre estate, The Rookery, Sproughton, Ipswich when Brooke House became a school run by William Levi Harris and later became a nursing home. In 1939, Cobbold was a local director of Lloyds Bank, living at 'The Rookery', Sproughton, near Ipswich with his wife Evelyn and had four indoor servants. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1920-1944 but does not seem to have exhibited. Herbert St George Cobbold died at The Rookery, Sproughton on 23 November 1944.
