CONSTABLE, Arawhinoa Ella

1893 - 1966

Arawhinoa Ella Constable was born at Temuka in the District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand on 30 April 1893, and given the Maori name of Arawhinoa, which the family soon shortened to Winoa, daughter of Hugh Golding Constable and his wife Elinor May Constable née Bomford. Just to the east of Temuka is another town called Arowhenua, which may have had something to do with Winoa’s name. A noted artist and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1932-1939 exhibiting from Hoe Mill House, Maldon, Essex in 1932 an oil 'The Copper Jug', two watercolours 'White Poppies' and 'The Farewell Salute...Crimea 1920' and a watercolour/black & white 'Devonshire Cottage', in 1933 two watercolours 'Sunset over Woodham Walter, Essex' and 'Little London, Essex', in 1935 she exhibited 'Easter Flowers' and in 1937 an oil 'Autumn Copper'. She never married and, when her parents died, lived quietly at Hoe Mill House, not too far from East Bergholt from where her famous great-grandfather John Constable came. Arawhinoa Ella Constable died at The Old Rectory, Kettleburgh, near Woodbridge, Suffolk on 2 October 1966.
