BUTLER, Philip John

1890 - 1977

Philip John Butler was born at Finchley, Middlesex on 26 July 1890, son of William Butler, an engineer manager, and his wife Ellen née Catford, who married at Finchley in 1877. In 1901, Phillip was a 10-year-old, living at 20 Crosby Road, Birkdale, Lancashire with his parents, 39-year-old William and 38-year-old Ellen, and three siblings Mary Elizabeth 9, William Henry 3 and Constance Winifred 2. In 1911, a 20-year-old private secretary, living at Landeck, Gloucester Road, Kingston Hill, Kingston-on-Thames, the home of his uncle, 58-year-old Joseph Butler, an engineer manager, and his family. Later that year he joined the army at Aldershot, as a private in the Middlesex Regiment and during the First World War, served in France in the Friends' Ambulance Unit. He married at Blyth, Suffolk in 1939, Emily Anita Butler née Leer and in 1939 they were living at 'Glenview', Barking Road, Needham Market, Suffolk where Philip was a farmer. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1942-1967 and exhibited from Glenview, Needham Market in 1942, four works 'Frederick Andrews, late Headmaster of Ackworth School', 'Summer Wedding', 'The Home of the Nightingale' and 'Windings', in 1943 an oil 'Autumn Ploughing', in 1944 'The Vicar of Needham Market (Rev W G Hargrave Thomas)' and 'The Little Gypsy', in 1945 two oils, 'Peace Blessing Labour' and 'Glad Day', in 1946 an oil 'The Knitter and her Work' and a watercolour 'Frosty Morn', and in 1951 was showing an oil 'Me and my Dog' and a watercolour 'Deep in the Wood' and was a regular annual exhibitor his last exhibit being in 1966 and oil 'Autumn at Barking'. Philip John Butler died at 126 Winthrop Road, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 6 May 1977.
