CLARKE, John Charles
John Charles Clarke was born at Wilby, Suffolk around 1828. When of Stradbroke, Suffolk he married at Redenhall Church, Harleston, Norfolk on 27 December 1860, Ann Carman (1828-1905), daughter of Samuel Carman of Harleston. Clarke was a photographer at 1 Brudenell Terrace, Aldeburgh, Suffolk 1865-1885 but by 1891 an ‘artist & photographer’ living at Sutherland House, High Street, Southwold with his 62-year-old wife Ann and their children, 28-year-old Charles C, born at Harleston and 24-year-old Marion, born at Aldeburgh, Suffolk but may have retained a business at Southwold as a photographer. Ten years later an ‘artist living on own means’ and had moved up the road at Dalkeith, High Street, Southwold but both children had moved on, but the business also traded as John Charles Clarke & Son and his son Charles later carried on the business. His wife died at Aldeburgh in 1905, aged 76 and John Charles Clarke died at Dalkeith, High Street, Aldeburgh on 24 January 1918, aged 89.
