CLARKE, Edith Annie
Edith Annie Clarke, known as Annie, was born at Dulverton, Somerset on 31 January 1857, daughter of Isaac Clarke (c1826-18 December 1915), a substantial draper at 15 High Street, Dulverton, Somerset, and his wife Elizabeth née Giles (1827-1888), Edith was a younger sister to Katie Marie Clarke. In 1861, Annie was a 5-year-old living at 13 Market Place, Penzance, Cornwall with her parents, 35-year-old Isaac, a draper employing fifteen assistants, and his 36-year-old wife Elizabeth, both born at Dulverton, together with her four siblings, Margaret Elizabeth 9, Katie 7, Frederick Giles 2 and newly born Frank, and they retained a governess and three indoor servants. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1894-1898 and was living with her brother Frederick Giles Clarke, a soda & cordial and bottle washing machine manufacturer, and his wife Bessie at 62 London Road, Ipswich in 1883, when she exhibited ‘Garden Poppies’ and a table lot. In 1894 she exhibited from Marlesford Hall, Wickham Market, Suffolk, two watercolours 'Woodbridge' and 'Cannes Harbour', in February 1897 from Worlingham Hall, Beccles, Suffolk, two watercolours 'Umbrella Pines' and 'Beccles Tower' and in November 1897, 'A Marsh Road, Worlingham'. In 1939, Edith Annie Clarke was living at Addis Combe Lodge, Ferndale Road, Teignmouth, Devon, and she died at Worthing, Sussex in 1946, aged 90, she was unmarried.
