RANSOME, Edward Coleby
Edward Coleby Ransome was born at 'Sunnyside', Fonnereau Road, Ipswich on 1 September 1864, eldest son of James Edward Ransome (13 July 1839-30 January 1905), an agricultural engineer, and his wife Alice Gross (13 March 1837-5 January 1929), youngest daughter of Samuel Chilton Gross, who married at Alderton, Suffolk on 4 November 1863. Edward was educated at Haileybury, Great Amwell and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, taking his honours degree in Mathematics. In 1886 a mechanical engineer in the family firm of Ransome, Sims of Ipswich and in 1891 was living at 'Holmwood', Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. He married at Ruan Minor, Helston, Cornwall on 29 June 1893, Florence Mitford Smith (25 March 1857-15 May 1948), third daughter of Revd John James Smith, late vicar of Loddon, Norfolk. In 1901, a 38 year old mechanical engineer, living at Uppton Lodge, Warwick Road, Ipswich with his 43-year-old wife, who was born at Loddon, Norfolk and ten years later living at 'Highwood', Constitution Hill, Ipswich. A Life Member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1913-1938 but does not seem to have exhibited. Edward Coleby Ransome died, without issue, at Ipswich on 15 February 1939.
