HOLLIS, Geoffrey St John
Geoffrey St John Hollis was born at Birmingham in 1925, son of William John Hollis (12 June 1896-22 March 1985), a farmer's clerk, and his wife Mildred May née Hinton (4 June 1893-25 December 1989) who married at Kings Norton, Warwickshire in 1924 and in 1939 were living at Orchard House, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Geoffrey studied at Cambridge School of Art and at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art, gaining his diploma. He married at Colchester, Essex in 1952, Diana Westcott and, as a teacher, moved to Ipswich in 1955. A representational watercolourist and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1956-1974, exhibiting from 272 Colchester Road, Ipswich in 1955, a watercolour 'Oyster Smack on Wyatts Slip, West Mersa' and in 1956 two oils 'Ipswich Dock' and 'The River Deben, Ramsholt'. In 1957 he had on show two oils, 'Off the Grand Canal, Venice' and 'The Butt and Oyster, Pin Mill' and from 2 Parkside Avenue, Ipswich in 1966, two watercolours 'Windy Day, Minsmere' and 'Centaur and Millie, Pin Mill' and the following year an oil 'Dunwich Marshes' and a watercolour 'Gate on the Marsh, Waldringfield' which seems to have been his last. He shared an exhibition with Roger Finch at The Haste Gallery, Ipswich in 1959 and this gallery regularly exhibited his work. Geoffrey St John Hollis died in Ipswich Hospital on 8 December 2020 leaving a widow and two children.
