BURRELL, Hon. Catherine Mary Sermonda
Catherine Mary Sermonda Burrell was born on 30 June 1874, daughter of Willoughby Merrick Campbell Burrell, 5th Baron Gwydyr (26 October 1841-13 February 1915) of Stoke Park, Ipswich, who succeeded as 5th Baron in 1909, and his first wife Mary Bankes, only child of Sir Thomas Bankes, who married in Paris on 4 September 1873. Catherine's mother Mary amassed an enormous collection of Wagner documents of every kind and planned to publish a complete life of Richard Wagner but only the immense first volume was published (1898) covering 21 years; the other material is now at Philadelphia (Catalogue published 1929). Catherine was a painter in oils and watercolour of portraits and landscapes, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1900-1901 and as S. [Sermonda] Burrell, exhibited in 1900, two oils 'Lord Gwyder' and 'The Countess of Lindsey' and the following year exhibited two watercolours, ‘Flower Field near Haarlem’ and ‘Eilenroc, Corsica’. She married at St Margaret's Church, Westminster on 16 July 1902, Sir John Henniker-Heaton, 2nd Bart (19 April 1877-21 February 1963), M.P. In 1915, she was the heiress of her father, the 5th and last Baron Gwyder, her two elder brothers having died, Radulphus (1876-1882) and John Percy (1878-1902). Catherine Mary Sermonda Henniker-Heaton died at Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent on 24 November 1958 leaving issue, John Victor Peregrine (1903-1971) [later 3rd Bart.], Peter Joseph (1909-1976), Clement Algernon Charles (1909-1983) and Mary Araluen Elizabeth.
