Helen Gilbart, was born at Hammersmith, London in 1955, daughter of Frank Anderson Gilbart (1922-2015) and his wife Joan née Upton, who married in Surrey in 1948. Helen won an honours degree in art and geography at Lancaster University 1975-1978 then undertook a postgraduate painting course at Cyprus College of Art, under a Peter Minet Trust Award, 1983-1984 and completed an advanced diploma in printmaking at St Martin's Central School of Art and Design 1985-1987. An Oppenheim-John Downes Trust Travel Award, enabled her to paint in Spain in 1898. A professional painter with a wide range of subject matter, she exhibited at Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne; David Bomberg and his Followers Exhibition in 1991 and in 1997 at the 25th anniversary exhibition at Bury St Edmund's Art Gallery, Suffolk. She had solo exhibitions at the Bedarte Gallery, Almeria, Spain and South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknaell. In 2002-2003 was artist in residence at Sedgwick Museum, Department of Earth Sciences, Cambridge University. She married in the Deben district in Suffolk in 2000, London art dealer David M. Routledge and lives at The Stone House, The Causeway, Middleton, Saxmundham where her work is centred. A fully qualified QTLS teacher, Helen arranges art classes and has a wide experience of teaching fine art within schools and in further and higher education environments.
