Lupe Cunha

Lupe de Almeida Cunha, originates from Brazil. Lupe commenced her artistic life as a photographer in the 1970s, firstly in Chicago where she was inspired by the Abstract Expressionists and the frozen waters of Lake Michigan, then in Brazil where she was inspired by the colour work of Hélio Oiticica (1937-1980) and the mountains and sea of Rio and then finally settling in the UK where artists like John Piper (1903-1992) and Patrick Heron (1920-1999) continued to inspire her work while cooling her colours down with our milder weather. Her work was a mixture of abstract figurative referencing the sea and mountains but in 2017 she began her current body of work abandoning the subject and embracing the freedom of pure abstract work working in mixed media on paper or canvas. Her work continues to be an abstract figurative style usually inspired on her own travels and photographs and memories from which she composes her paintings, but inveriably returns to painting from the sea and or the mountains, both dominant influences from her early life and very important to her creative life. She has exhibited at Apex Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Sea Pictures Gallery, Clare, both in Suffolk; Minories Gallery Colchester, Sentinal Gallery, Wivenhoe; Colchester Art College; Brightlingsea Gallery in Essex and elsewhere. A full member of Suffolk Open Studios from her studio at 83a Ballingdon Street, Sudbury, Suffolk and also works from Benham Garllery, Cuckoo Farm Studios in Colchester, Essex and also runs regular monthly workshops in the summer months. http://www.lupecunha.co.uk
