BEAR LANE GALLERY

1967 - 1972

Bear Lane Gallery in Oxford was founded by Nick Waterlow (1941-2009) in 1967. In 1972 the Bear Lane Gallery merged with the Museum of Modern Art to become Modern Art Oxford. Nick Waterlow moved to Sydney in 1977 and was a director of the Ivan Dougherty Gallery at New South Wales University’s College of Fine Arts. Mr Waterlow’s wife, Romy, with whom he had two sons and a daughter, died of cancer in 1998. In 2009, the 68-year-old was found stabbed to death along with his daughter, cookbook author Chloe Waterlow, 37, at her home in a suburb of Sydney. The Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, now known as Modern Art Oxford, was founded by architect Trevor Green towards the end of 1965. Suffolk artists who exhibited at Bear Lane Gallery include Arthur Giardelli and Valerie Thornton.
