MERRICK, William George

1857 - 1935

William George Merrick was born at Calthorpe Street, Gray's Inn Road, London in 1857, son of Edward George Merrick (c1818-6 March 1862) and his wife Emma née Smith (c1822-4 January 1909), who married at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol on 10 July 1846. In 1861, William was a 3-year-old, living at 79 Frederick Street, St Mary Islington, London with his parents, Edward, a 42-year-old banker's clerk, and 40-year-old Emma, both born in Bristol and siblings Charlotte 13, Alfred 12, Isaac 10, Edward 9 and Joseph 7, all born at St Pancras, London. William's father died at 79 Frederick Street, Islington on 6 March 1862 and in 1871, Emma, now a widow, was living at 16 Harpur Street, Holborn, London with her children. In 1891, William was a 33-year-old unmarried architectural draughtsman, living at Walberswick Street, Lambeth, London with his 70-year-old mother Emma but by 1901 they had moved to 46 Chatto Road, Battersea when William is noted as an architect. By 1909 they had moved to Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk where his mother died on 4 January 1909 and in 1911 William was a 53-year-old unmarried architect, living at Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk. In 1921 William George Merrick was a lodger at 124 Fore Street, Ipswich and he died at Ipswich in 1935, he was unmarried.
