RATCLIFFE, Anthony

1919 - 2017

Anthony James Ratcliffe, was born at Romford, Essex on 12 March 1919, second of the three sons of John Wesley Ratcliffe (19 April 1888-1960), a railway clerk, and his wife Blanche Alice Price née Read (30 April 1889-2 March 1963), who married at Romford in 1918 and in 1939 they were living at 101 Hillcroft Crescent, Watford, Hertfordshire. Tony was educated at The City of London School and although he enjoyed sketching whilst at school, he did not start oil painting until later in life when he became self-taught via the medium of ‘painting-by-numbers’. Tony has spent much of his adult life in coastal East Anglia, but from boyhood has always been very much involved in classical music. He has also owned a number of boats, from dinghies to offshore yachts, which have always been based on the River Deben and much of his work has a local flavour. His subjects and style are very individual being drawn from many experiences and memories, mainly from his past yachting trips. He has also enjoyed a great interest in the French Impressionist School and has found himself often bringing many of their colours into his palette. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists. He lived at Elder Cottage, The Ferry, Felixstowe, Suffolk and he died on 20 December 2017.
