CUBITT, Irene

1878 - 1973

Irene May Cubitt was born at Ipswich on 29 February 1878, and baptised at St Mary-le-Tower Church, Ipswich on 2 April 1878, daughter of Frederick Cubitt, an oil cake merchant, and his wife Julia Mary née Salter (9 July 1850-28 July 1931), who married at Attleborough, Norfolk on 6 August 1873. In 1881, Irene was a 3-year-old, living at Grafton Lodge, 28 Burlington Road, Ipswich with her parents, 40-year-old Frederick and 30-year-old Julia with three siblings, 6-year-old George Eaton Stannard, born at Basingstoke, Hampshire, with Gerald Baker 4, and Douglas Frank 2, both born at Ipswich. On 24 December 1888, they moved across the road to Hollenden House, 9 Burlington Road, Ipswich. Irene studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art, and in August 1892 won a prize for her modelling and in February 1900, took second prize in the 'Shading Ornament from the Cast (advanced) class, the first prize was taken by Eliza Mackay and in the same year her work was accepted for her Art Class Teachers' Certificate. By 1911 the family had moved to The Grange at Otley, just outside Ipswich and in 1939 she was living at Ingleside, Ivry Street, Ipswich. Irene May Cubitt died at 13 Holly Road, Ipswich on 11 February 1973, she was unmarried.
