MAW, Thomas
Thomas Maw was born at Needham Market, Suffolk in 1843, eldest son of Samuel Alexander Maw (27 October 1807-4 July 1884), a banker, and his wife Rachel Alexander (19 November 1809-17 February 1899), a cousin, and daughter of Samuel Alexander (7 October 1849-15 December 1884), bank owner, of Goldrood, Ipswich, who married at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 8 June 1841. Thomas was educated at Bootham School in York 1856-1860 and married at Friends' Meeting House, Leeds, Yorkshire on 19 June 1878, Emily Thorp (1853-13 January 1914), daughter of John Hall Thorp and Annabella Windsor. They had six children: Rachel Winifred, Samuel Herbert, Thomas Henry, Emily Margaret, Ethel Windsor, and Lucy Helen. In 1881, a 37-year-old bank manager, living at High Street, Needham Market, Suffolk with his 27-year-old wife and two children, Rachel and Samuel. A painter in oil of landscapes, he exhibited at the Needham Market Fine Arts & Industrial Exhibition at the Town Hall, Needham Market July 11 1867, and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1886-1890, exhibiting from Needham Market in 1882, a watercolour 'Home Sketches' and in 1883 two watercolours 'In our Garden' and 'Old Porch, St John's Chapel, Needham', in all he exhibited some twenty works 1882-1890 including in 1890 ‘Old Pollards’, ‘A Weedy Pond’ and ‘A Shady Nook’. Thomas Maw died at Needham Market on 26 June 1891, aged 47 and buried at Friends' Meeting House burial ground, Needham Market.
