Annie Amelia Biddlecombe, was born at Woodbine Terrace, Victoria Road, Romford, Essex in 1865, daughter of Henry Biddlecombe (1836-1906), a baker & pastrycook, and his wife Sarah Emma. They were living at Romford in 1871, but by 1875 had moved to Ipswich where, in 1881, Annie was a 15 year old student, living at 1 Norwich Road, Ipswich with her parents, Henry 44 and Sarah 39, with siblings Walter Henry 14, Percy Edward 8, both born at Romford, and Fred Thomas 5, born at Ipswich. Annie studied at Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880 gained a certificate in freehand drawing. The family emigrated to the United States where she married at Detroit, Wayne, Michigan on 6 June 1893, Edward Thomas Atherton and they had two sons.
