COWAN, Mabel Grace

1897 - 1992

Mabel Grace Cowan was born at Woolwich, London on 23 July 1897, daughter of then Major Henry Vivian Cowan (10 November 1854-25 January 1918), of the Royal Artillery, and his wife Mabel Talbot Laing (1860-2 March 1928), fourth daughter of the late Sir James Laing, of Etal Manor, Northumberland, who married at the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Etal, Berwick-upon-Tweed on 30 January 1894. In 1901, Mabel was a 3-year-old, living at 50 Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, London with her siblings, 5-year-old Lillian Maud who was born in India and 1 year old Helen Margaret, born at Woolwich, being cared for by four indoor servants, her parents are absent. In 1921 Mabel was a 23-year-old art student living at 21 Liverpool Road, Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey with her 60-year-old mother Mabel, the home of her uncle 58-year-old James Innes Cowan. In 1939, a landscape artist, living at 'St Kilda', West View, Salcombe Hill, Sidmouth, Devon with other Cowan family, her uncle James Innes (14 March 1865-1940), a director of Boyant Carton Company, and her aunt Lillian Anna (13 November 1865-1955) and Mabel's sister Helen Margaret (28 April 1899-1976), a SR Nurse in Cairo, all unmarried. Mabel was a member of the Society of Women Artists and exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 159 Cromwell Road, London SW5 in 1923, a watercolour 'Pontetresa, Italy' and a pen & colour drawing 'Convent School, Sanderstead, Surrey' she also exhibited at the Royal Academy. Mabel Grace Cowan died at 108 Cooden Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex on 24 June 1992, she was unmarried.
