COOPER, Walter Savage

1861 - 1943

Walter Savage Cooper was born at Castle Road, St Pancras, London on 18 November 1861, son of James Cooper, a tailor, who was born at Framlingham, Suffolk, and his wife Jane Elizabeth née Hayes, who married at Oxford in 1848. By 1861, his parents had moved from Oxford, where five of their children were born, to Castle Road, St Pancras, London where 41-year-old James and 35-year-old Jane had a further three children, including Walter. In 1891, a 29-year-old artist painter, a visitor at Christchurch Street, Ringwood, Hampshire, the home of John Conway, jun., a wholesale grocer, and his family. A member of the Ipswich Art Club from Haverstock Hill, Hampstead, London 1900-1907 exhibiting from Haverstock Hill in 1903, 'A Quiet Road', and as Savage Cooper he also exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Royal Society of British Artists and the New Water Colour Society. A man of many talents, a singer, actor, and a playwright including 'The King's Blessing' and others and, as an artist, commissioned by Hampstead General Hospital in 1905, to paint the portrait of their founder Dr. W. Heath Strange. In 1911, a 49-year-old artist painter, living at 51 Haverstock Hill, Hampstead with two of his sisters, Jane Elizabeth 56 and Margaret 53, all were unmarried but by 1921 they had moved to Althorne, near Chelmsford. In 1939, Walter Savage Cooper was a retired artist(painter), living at Haverstock, Fambridge Road, Althorne, Chelmsford, Essex and was still living there when he died at St John's Hospital, Chelmsford on 5 April 1943, his age being given as 80, he was unmarried. This painter is very often conflated with a William Savage Cooper (1856-1926) and a William Sidney Cooper (18541927).
