CUBLEY, Henry

1819 - 1883

Henry Ward Cubley was baptised at St Mary’s Nottingham on 25 October 1819, son of Samuel Horsley Cubley (1785-1859), an artist, and his wife Ann née Ward, who married at Bonsall, Derbyshire on 26 October 1809, Henry was the grandson of Revd Richard Ward, of Brandon, Suffolk. In 1841, Henry was a drawing master, living at Willow Walk, Holy Trinity, Cambridge, with his parents and siblings, Sarah 23 and Ann 10. Noted in Kelly’s Suffolk Directory 1846, as a portrait painter at Meat Market, Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk, and he married at Trinity Church, Regent's Park, London on 19 December 1846, Rosa Reeve, youngest daughter of Mr. Reeve, Professor of Music, of Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmund’s. In 1851, a 30 [sic] year-old portrait painter & drawing, living at Wright Wilson Street, Ordsall, Nottinghamshire with his 24-year-old wife Rosa and two children, 2-year-old Annie, born at Boston, Lincolnshire and 1-year-old Flora, born at Retford, Nottinghamshire. In 1861, an artist drawing master, living at Moorgate, Clarborough, Nottinghamshire, now with six daughters. His wife Rosa died in 1863, and in 1870, he married secondly, at Kensington, London, 30-year-old Emily Sutton of Martin, Lincolnshire and the following year was still living at Clarborough with five of his daughters. In 1881, ‘artist & drawing master, painter’ living with his wife Emily and their 9-year-old son Harold. Henry Ward Cubley died at Clarborough in 1883, aged 62, and buried at Retford, St Saviour on 30 June 1883.

There are two other Nottingham Cubley artists, Henry's brother, William Harold Cubley (1814-1896) and nephew Henry Hadfield Cubley (1 858-1896) who both exhibited at the Royal Academy.
