COLLIER, Arthur Bevan

1832 - 1908

Arthur Bevan Collier was born at Plymouth, Devon on 25 March 1832 and baptised at Plymouth St Andrew Church on 21 June 1832, youngest son of John Collier (18 April 176928 February 1849), a merchant, shipowner and an M.P. for Plymouth, and his wife Emma Porrett, fourth daughter of Robert Porrett, of North Hill House, Tavistock Road, Plymouth. Arthur was educated at Sherborne and in 1851, a 19-year-old articled solicitor's clerk, living at 18 Gloucester Road, Paddington, the home of his wealthy aunt, 35-year-old Isabella Collier, with their 61-year-old mother Emma, and Isabella's children, Robert 9, Margaret 4 and John 1, and she retained five indoor servants. Arthur married at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster, London on 17 May 1853, Eliza Blacker (1833-1891) and in 1861, a 29-year-old landscape artist, living at Carthamartha, Callington, Cornwall with his 28-year-old wife Eliza and their daughters, Anne 6, born in Scotland and Lillian 3, born at Whitchurch, Devon where he was an officer in the 6th Cornwall Rifles Territorial Army. In 1881, he was living at 4 Oakley Street, Chelsea and was a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1884-1888, exhibiting in 1884 from Carthamartha in Cornwall, a large oil 'A Cornish Coast'. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy 1855-1899; the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1892, at the second exhibition of the Society of Western Artists, he exhibited 'Spring at Carthamartha', 'On the Walkham' and 'On the West Okement'. Following the death of his wife he married secondly at St Peter's Church, Edinburgh on 6 September 1893, Emily Blaker (1838-1913), fourth daughter of Elfred Blaker and a sister of his first wife. Arthur Bevan Collier died at Carthamartha, Launceston, Cornwall on 20 February 1908, aged 75, leaving a widow and a daughter.
